Case study
Enhancing maritime SAR operational capability in the Central Mediterranean
The Maritime Search and Rescue Council delivered a bespoke training programme for a German-based maritime search and rescue organisation operating in the Central Mediterranean, designed to strengthen the professionalism, leadership and operational capability of crews responding to complex rescue operations involving large numbers of survivors. The programme combined Non-Technical Skills (NTS), SAR Radar, Maritime Skills for Search and Rescue, and On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) training, with a focus on decision-making, leadership, bridge resource management, communication and effective coordination in demanding operational environments.
Building on the classroom training, the Council delivered live operational exercises aboard the organisation’s rescue vessel, enabling crews to apply their learning in realistic mass rescue scenarios. The practical training enhanced command and control, team coordination and operational decision-making, improving the confidence and competence of personnel responsible for delivering safe, effective and professional humanitarian maritime search and rescue operations.
