The course is designed for personnel with in-date Module 2, 3, or 4 certification, focusing on the responsibilities of a team commander within search and rescue operations.
It covers a broad range of topics such as incident management, risk assessment, communication, scene management, welfare, and the DEFRA Flood Rescue Concept of Operations from a commander’s perspective. Participants will develop critical skills for leading operations, including managing risk, coordinating resources, and understanding legal frameworks.
The course emphasises incident management, dynamic risk assessment, health and safety, and the importance of clear communication during all phases of an operation. Briefing and debriefing techniques, crime scene management, and the welfare of team members are also addressed.
Commanders will gain a thorough understanding of water rescue personal protective equipment (PPE), search management techniques, and flood management considerations, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding crew deployment and rescue efforts.
The program includes resource management, incident planning, and media relations, with special attention to challenges like night operations and urban or rural flood rescues. Participants will also learn about the credentialing process to ensure team readiness.
By the end of the course, commanders will be fully equipped to lead search and rescue teams effectively in hazardous environments, ensuring operational success and team safety.
