The Coastal Incident and Flood Initial Responder course, aligned with the DEFRA Flood Rescue Concept of Operations Training – Module 2, equips participants with the fundamental knowledge and skills to respond safely and effectively to water and flood incidents. It is designed for emergency responders, maritime teams, and supporting agencies who may be deployed in dynamic flood and coastal incident environments.
Training begins with hazard recognition, personal safety, and the use of appropriate PPE. Students then develop competency in wading techniques, basic rescue methods, and scene risk assessment. Practical sessions place participants in realistic scenarios, teaching them to recognise water dynamics, communicate effectively in noisy and hazardous conditions, and provide immediate support to casualties while awaiting specialist teams.
By the end of the course, responders are confident in applying safe working practices, supporting coordinated rescue operations, and contributing to team-based water incident management, ensuring their readiness to assist in challenging coastal and flood response operations.
