Maritime Search & Rescue On-Scene Coordinator (IMO Model 3.1

Enhance your skills, knowledge and qualifications as a Maritime SAR On-Scene Coordinator

This remotely ran course aims to provide knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Search and Rescue On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) on a dedicated SAR unit for search and rescue incidents, as defined by the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual Volume III (IAMSAR Vol. 3).


Based on the content of IAMSAR Vol 3, this course is intended to provide an overview of the organisation of maritime search and rescue (SAR) services in general and train the specific functions and tasks of the On-Scene Coordinator. The course covers the coordination of SAR operations, initial actions by assisting craft, search and rescue functions, communications and on-scene coordination.


By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Coordinate operations of SAR facilities on scene
  • Receive, modify and implement a search action plan or rescue plan from a Search Mission Coordinator
  • Coordinate on-scene communications
  • Monitor the performance of other participating SAR facilities
  • Ensure safety of all SAR assets and assess factors that may compromise the safety of the SAR operation
  • Make periodic situation reports (SITREPs) to the SMC
  • Maintain detailed records of the operation
  • Request further assistance and resources as deemed necessary


Entry Requirements


Students should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of maritime Search and Rescue operations and concepts and have experience in either a maritime SAR control room setting (MRCC etc.) or experience onboard dedicated maritime SAR assets.

Delivery


The course is delivered remotely via Zoom by a team of highly experience maritime SAR On-Scene Commanders who have coordinated a wide range of maritime SAR incidents around the world including mass casualty events, vessel fires, complex searches and migrant incidents. All of our instructors are highly qualified and experienced maritime SAR trainers and assessors.
