Two Distinct One-Day Courses for Operational and Management Level Maritime Professionals

As maritime migration continues to present complex legal, operational, and humanitarian challenges across global sea routes, the need for informed, well-prepared maritime professionals has never been greater. This one-day intensive course is designed to support Masters, DPAs, shipping company executives, and legal and compliance teams in understanding and managing the realities of responding to maritime migration and mass rescue operations at sea.


This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the global maritime migration landscape, with a focus on operational preparedness, legal obligations, and coordinated response during complex SAR operations involving vulnerable persons at sea by commercial vessels.


Delivered by senior maritime SAR Commanders and experienced maritime migration practitioners, the training is built around real-world scenarios, legal frameworks, and practical guidance, ensuring participants leave with a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities when facing high-risk, high-consequence situations.


Our instructors bring deep operational knowledge, SAR coordination experience, and maritime legal expertise—ensuring your team receives relevant, practical, and actionable training.

This course bridges the gap between legal obligations and practical realities for shipboard personnel. Whether operating in the Central Mediterranean, the Aegean, the Gulf of Aden, or other high-risk maritime migration zones, shipping companies and maritime professionals must be equipped to act decisively and lawfully in the face of humanitarian crises at sea.



What You Will Learn:


  • Gain an overview of global maritime migration patterns and drivers
  • Identify current high-risk maritime migration regions and emerging operational threats
  • Understand the legal and regulatory framework governing rescue at sea in migration contexts, including:
    • UNCLOS
    • SOLAS
    • SAR Convention
    • Refugee Convention
    • IMO and UNHCR Resolutions and Guidance
  • Learn best practices for mitigating, planning and managing mass rescue operations onboard
  • Explore the challenges of multi-agency coordination in complex, political SAR events
  • Examine the human, operational, and legal implications of responding to distressed or overloaded vessels
  • Consider humanitarian responsibilities and safeguarding principles when assisting vulnerable individuals at sea

 This course builds on the operational realities explored in the Operational Level course, and is designed for managerial and executive-level responsibility. When managing vessels or fleets operating across maritime migration routes, shipping companies and maritime leaders must be equipped to develop sound internal policies, ensure legal compliance, and minimise downtime and financial losses — all whilst responding credibly to high-profile humanitarian events at sea. 


What You Will Learn:

  

  • Understand the strategic and geopolitical context of maritime migration and its implications for corporate governance
  • Identify and assess current and emerging risk zones through a policy, business planning, insurance, and compliance lens 
  • Examine key legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to senior decision-makers
  • Apply strategic-level frameworks to evaluate macro-level risks affecting maritime operations and organisational positioning caused by maritime migration
  • Assess internal organisational preparedness, risk exposure, and policy gaps
  • Explore strategic risk mitigation and reputational safeguards in complex SAR events
  • Participate in a scenario-based tabletop exercise to test executive crisis decision-making and policy readiness

Must have completed the Maritime Migration Risk and Response Course – Operational Level prior to commencement.
